🚂 Hotwire Native Field Notes: The Real Challenge Starts After Hello World 🚂
Hotwire Native lets Rails developers ship iOS and Android apps from an existing website without learning React Native or Flutter. But most tutorials stop at "load a webpage in a WebView" — actually building an app that feels usable surfaces a whole set of problems the tutorials never cover: how Bridge Components turn a webview's hamburger menu into a native menu, what else you can do with the native header, and how each tab under a Tab Bar manages its own navigation stack, among other things.
This talk walks through my real experience implementing Hotwire Native in a Rails project — the gap between "following a tutorial to get a working shell" and "building an app with a complete, navigable experience," and the details and pitfalls I had to fill in along the way. I'll also share the real technical conflicts I ran into — and how I resolved them — as a Rails developer crossing into the native iOS world (Swift / SwiftUI). This talk is for Rails developers curious about Hotwire Native who want to go deeper into the implementation details.
