Ruby Jam: A Monthly Meetup for the Ruby Programming Language in Taiwan 💎

AI & techProductCareers

Hosted by Ruby Taiwan

Day 1, Taipei · Open to the public

Ruby Jam is a monthly technical meetup that provides a platform for the Ruby community to connect, learn, and grow.

♦️ Hello, Spinel: The New Ruby AOT Compiler! ♦️

Matz: "Kind to whoever writes it, kind to the machine that runs it. I want both."

AOT, JIT, C Extensions, FFI... You've heard these terms, but do you know what role each of them plays?

Matz, the creator of Ruby, released a new project called Spinel this year!
Aotokitsuruya will use easy-to-follow analogies to introduce this new Ruby AOT (Ahead-of-Time) compiler:

  • AOT vs. JIT: Think of AOT as a meal prepared in advance: it's quick to serve, but comes with some limitations. For example, familiar DSLs may not work as freely. JIT, on the other hand, is like a chef cooking to order: it's more flexible and customizable, but requires additional work at runtime.
  • C Extensions vs. FFI: One integrates C code into Ruby as an extension, while the other allows Ruby to call standalone C functions through FFI. How do they differ, and what are the trade-offs?
  • How Spinel works: How can a dynamic language like Ruby perform type inference to achieve something closer to static compilation? How does Spinel link native components directly at compile time to reduce the overhead of traditional FFI calls?

The talk will also feature a full demo showcasing how Spinel brings together microphone input and Whisper for speech-to-text transcription, uses native macOS features to render a subtitle window, and packages the whole application into a lightweight, standalone executable.

No compiler or C programming background required. Come check out Matz's new toy with us!

✈️ Rails Beginner, Big Adventure! My First Kaigi on Rails! ✈️

Can you take on an international Ruby conference in Japan even if your Japanese isn't that great?

At this Ruby Jam lightning talk, I'll be sharing my first experience at Kaigi on Rails 2026!

As a Rails beginner, what was it like to attend an international tech conference in Japan for the very first time? From struggling to follow the talks in Japanese, to working up the courage to take a photo with DHH, the creator of Rails, to discovering that Rubyists have all kinds of hidden talents at a live house after the conference!

It turns out that attending a tech conference is about much more than just listening to talks. There are so many unexpected encounters and stories waiting to happen.

So, what exactly happened on this trip? Come join my Ruby Jam talk and see the international Ruby community through the eyes of a Rails beginner!
